University of Guelph Master’s Scholarship in Pathobiology

A 2-year MSc position is available in the Department of Pathobiology commencing May 1 or September 1, 2021. The MSc research project will involve conducting a series of challenge trials in the OVC Animal Isolation Facility to optimize an infection model for post-weaning E. coll diarrhea. The research project will include animal work (eg. animal trials, sample collection from live pigs and during postmortem), as well as laboratory work (eg RFLP-PCR, bacteriology), analysis of clinical and laboratory data collected during the trial, and use of epidemiological methods to analyze data. Experience with animal handling/animal management will be considered an asset, as will previous experience with laboratory work. Specifically, the association of genetic factor, age of pigs, and infectious dosage with severity of diarrhea, bacterial shedding, and histology lesions in pigs challenged with enterotoxigenic E. coli will be investigated. The optimized infection model will then be used to study the effect of alternative method (Ex. probiotics) on post weaning E. coll diarrhea. Eligibility Criteria Selection of the successful candidate is based on a combination of: academic criteria, relevant interest and experience, referees’ evaluations, and an assessment of the candidate’s career goals and motivation. Merrimack College Presidential Graduate Fellowship- Master’s Scholarship

The Presidential Fellowship provides 100% of a student’s graduate tuition and includes a nine-month, 25 hour per week, unpaid fellowship placement. Please note: College-funded fellowships may be awarded, competitively, to students who have been admitted to a graduate program and who are academically eligible. In order to maintain eligibility for a graduate fellowship, a student must be enrolled full-time and must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. The placement will provide training and experience in the program area in which the student is enrolled and is intended for the educational benefit of the student. Receipt of the fellowship and placement does not create an employment relationship with Merrimack and does not include any wages or monetary remuneration besides the tuition benefit. This fellowship includes either an on-campus or off-campus placement. Students limited to 20 hours a week for the unpaid fellowship (e.g., international students, etc.) will work with the program director/dean to arrange and account for an additional 5-hour-a-week research component that may include (up to 5 hours per week) scheduled meeting time with the respective program director/dean/designated instructor. If you are offered and accept a fellowship position, you will not be eligible for any other discounts or scholarships, including a merit-based Dean scholarship or the Double Warrior alumni scholarship. If you are originally awarded a scholarship and then are given a fellowship placement, you will no longer receive the merit scholarship. Awarded to a full or part-time graduate student in the College of Education whose career or scholarly interests focus on the concerns and needs of international students. Based on need and merit. Established in memory of Dr. Opstad (BA '51/MA '54/PhD '58) by his children David, Laura and Carol. This award was established in 1994 to honor the memory of Dr. Paul Opstad. Paul E. Opstad (B.A. 1940, M.A. 1954, and Ph.D. 1958) was a native Iowan who spent most of this career at California State University, Long Beach. During his 25 years there, Dr. Opstad served as foreign student advisor, taught psychology, and worked in the counseling center. He had a great interest in working with international students. He spent a year in Taiwan and the Philippines on a Fulbright Scholarship and worked as a Foreign Service officer with the U.S. Information Agency in Calcutta.
