Rhodes Scholarships are for young leaders of outstanding intellect and character who are motivated to engage with global challenges, committed to the service of others and show promise of becoming value-driven, principled leaders for the world’s future. The broad selection criteria are:  Academic excellence – specific academic requirements can be found under ‘Eligibility Criteria’ below.  Energy to use your talents to the full (as demonstrated by mastery in areas such as sports, music, debate, dance, theatre, and artistic pursuits, including where teamwork is involved).  Truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness and fellowship.  Moral force of character and instincts to lead, and to take an interest in your fellow human beings. There is one Rhodes Scholarship for East Africa each year. The Scholarship for East Africa was announced in 2018 and the first Scholar will arrive in October 2019. East Africa covers Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, South Sudan and Burundi. Kenyan citizens are not eligible for the Scholarship for East Africa but should apply instead for the Scholarship for Kenya.

The Eastern Africa Network for Bioinformatics Training (EANBiT) is a training network supported by Fogarty International Center of the National Institutes of Health (FIC-NIH, USA), the Initiative to Develop African Research Leaders (IDeAL) and the Human Health & Heredity in Africa (h3Africa.org). This network consists of three universities: Pwani (PU); Makerere (MU) and Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences and four Research Institutes (MUHAS), and four research institutions: International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology(icipe); KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme (KWTRP); Biosciences eastern and central Africa-International Livestock Research Institute (BecA-ILRI hub) and Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI). EANBiT aims to develop a critical mass of bioinformaticians in the region through a high-quality Masters training. Students are registered and spend their first year at one of the partner universities undertaking taught units before undertaking their research project at a partner research centre in the second year. Further, the taught units are enhanced through a 5-week intensive course facilitated by renowned local and international bioinformaticians. Consequently, the programme has an over 90% timely completion rate with many graduates wining PhD scholarships and research positions within a year of completion.

WASCAL Master’s Programme in Climate Change

WASCAL has opened calls for application for interested West Africans who look forward to studying Climate Change programmes at the post-graduate levels. interested pursuing in combatting Climate Change and improving livelihoods. With funding from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), WASCAL will be offering full scholarship to 154 students from eleven West African countries to pursue two (2) Master’s Research Programmes in Climate Change thematic areas. The countries are Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, The Gambia, and Togo. The two master’s research programmes are Climate Change and Informatics and Climate Change and Marine Sciences. In a statement issued by the Director of Capacity Building Programmes of WASCAL at its Headquarters in Accra, Prof. Daouda Kone emphasized that WASCAL was committed to providing high quality education to West African future policy makers. WASCAL is delighted to announce that we are ready once again to provide West African students with world class postgraduate tuition. Our scholarship programmes are unique and of international standards. That is why we are affiliated to all the Lead universities in the West African region. So we urge West African students to take this rare opportunity at their disposal, as we work together with the support of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), to provide hundred percent scholarship to combat the impacts of Climate Change and to improve livelihoods. Helmut Veith Stipend for Females in Computer Science

The Helmut Veith Stipend is dedicated to the memory of an outstanding computer scientist who worked in the fields of logic in computer science, computer-aided verification, software engineering, and computer security. Helmut Veith, who tragically passed away in March 2016, was a strong advocate and mentor for women in computer science. In honor of Helmut Veith’s efforts, a stipend for outstanding female students in computer science was established with the support of TU Wien, the Wolfgang Pauli Institute, and generous donations of friends and colleagues of Prof. Veith. Students who are awarded a scholarship receive EUR 6000 annually (paid in installments), and tuition fees are waived.

The JADS Program is open to applicants from AfDB member countries with relevant professional experience and a history of supporting their countries’ development efforts who are applying to a graduate degree program in energy development and related discipline. The program does not provide scholarships to any other graduate degree program. The scholarship program provides tuition, a monthly living stipend, round-trip airfare, health insurance, and travel allowance. Upon completion of their studies, the beneficiary scholars are expected to return to their home countries to apply and disseminate their newly acquired knowledge and skills, and contribute to the promotion of sustainable development of their countries.
