Environmental conservation and rural development: the role of local communities and non-state actors Call for Applications The RLC Campus at ZEF, University of Bonn, Germany, offers scholarships for PhD students from Africa, Asia and Latin America to participate in the transdisciplinary workshop "Environmental conservation and rural development: the role of local communities and nonstate actors”, May 8-12, 2022. Background The Right Livelihood College (RLC) is a global education and research initiative of universities and the Right Livelihood Foundation, widely known as the ‘Alternative Nobel Prize’. The RLC Campus in Bonn is hosted by the Center for Development Research (ZEF), University of Bonn, and supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). There are a myriad of environmental conservation projects and initiatives worldwide aiming at the responsible management and use of the environment and its resources. Starting from the promotion of sustainable land, soil and water use practices, via mushrooming new and larger Protected Areas such as Biosphere Reserves, Forest Priority Areas and Conservancies, to economic approaches such as Payments for Ecosystem Services. Many of them are strongly trying to include concepts of participation and sustainability as discussed by academia and non-state actors alike. However, global environmental destruction and resource depletion is still ongoing with catastrophic impacts. People living in rural parts of Africa, Asia and Latin America, for example as smallholders, pastoralists or indigenous forest users, who directly depend on their surrounding environment and its resources, are on the one hand ‘target groups’ of such projects, and on the other hand most vulnerable to socio-ecological changes and risks compromising their livelihoods. How are such projects and initiatives locally embedded? How can win-win situations be created? What approaches qualify as 'best practices' and what are the challenges for upscaling? What is the role of non-state actors? What does all that concretely mean to certain groups of local communities, and more generally, the future of rural development in Africa, Asia and Latin America? Upon this backdrop, the workshop will thematically focus on local level empirical PhD research in rural areas in Africa, Asia and Latin America. PhD students will have the opportunity to present and discuss their own research work in a cohesive transdisciplinary way by building on each participant’s expertise and experiences. The workshop targets the following objectives: to strengthen knowledge and understanding of concepts and methodological approaches related to environmental conservation and local communities as well as nonstate actors, to critically assess different pathways of environmental conservation and its actual and potential contributions with particular focus on local communities and non-state actor actions and involvement, to present own case studies from Africa, Asia and Latin America, and to showcase projects considered successful, to promote transmission of expertise and experience as well as networking between PhD students, “Alternative Nobel Prize” Laureates and other experts working on the topic around the world. MSc Postgraduate Research Opportunity MSs Project Title: Improving conservation value of Corncrake sites: The contribution of various early and late cover (ELC) types and quality to invertebrate diversity and abundance. Stipend: €18,000 per annum Responsible to: Project supervisors Dr. James Moran, Dr. Joanne O’Brien, Dr. John Carey Purpose of the Role The EU LIFE funded Atlantic Crex project (Improving Corncrake conservation status in Ireland by the enhancement of the SPA network and surrounding farmland) is coordinated by the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and includes partners from Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Údarás na Gaeltachta, Fota Wildlife Park and the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology. The overall objective of the LIFE Atlantic Crex project is to improve the conservation status in Ireland of the Corncrake by the enhancement of the SPA network and surrounding farmland. This project will take place on 8 project sites (in 9 SPAs and adjacent supporting farmland) which are predominantly privately owned. Adjacent supporting farmland is critical to the project as approximately 85% of the population occurs within the SPAs and associated hinterland. 1. Malin Head Catchment (including SPA IE0004146) 2. Inishbofin, Omey Island and Turbot Island Catchment (including SPA IE0004231) The Corncrake (Crex crex) is listed on Annex I of the Birds Directive (2009/147/EC) and its breeding grounds extend from Ireland to Asiatic Russia in the northern hemisphere. The Corncrake winters in southern and eastern Africa, migrating northwards to arrive on its breeding grounds from early April onwards and departing again in August and September. On account of the large decreases in both numbers and range, it is on the Birds of Conservation Concern in Ireland (BoCCI) list. The contribution of high quality Early and Late Cover (ELC) to successful Corncrake breeding is well known but the ecological mechanisms which underpin its contribution is not understood. The effectiveness of ELC establishment in the project will primarily focus on its effect on Corncrake numbers, but there is a requirement to measure its effect on species groups which predicate the ecological integrity of the site. This MSc will measure the contribution of various ELC cover types and quality to conserve and increase invertebrate diversity and abundance. This will inform project objectives (e.g. the ELC scorecard) and act as a demonstration project that encourages complementary research within similar projects. The MSc will disseminate findings through peer reviewed articles, projects reports, conferences and seminars, as well as Knowledge Exchange Groups. HD SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION The Centre of African Studies offers 1 PhD scholarships to African nationals as part of the Governance for Development in Africa Initiative funded by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation. Applications are invited for PhD studentships focused on the area of state capacities, governance and bureaucracy for development. It is well known that the Built Environment contributes around 40% of all carbon emissions globally, and that, of this, energy and water consumption make up a significant proportion. Many opportunities therefore exist to help rectify this position and to create meaningful outcomes to support decarbonisation of the construction sector. This research focuses on the underlying physics of heat dissipation and water flow in buildings, and on the analysis of related demand patterns and associated data using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques. Here, statistical and deep learning methods will be used to identify the optimum method to facilitate analysis so as to allow improved decision-making and define enhanced pathways to Net Zero energy and water usage within buildings. As well as developing and assessing appropriate techniques, the work will draw comparisons with engineering and simulation-based predictions of water and energy consumption. The focus of the research will be on consumption at the building scale, but we envisage a future interface with urban scale demand models. Applicants are expected to possess a Master’s degree in Engineering, Statistics, Data Science or related quantitative fields. An understanding of how to apply deep learning techniques to engineering problems, experience of working with energy and water demand and/or a working knowledge of building performance patterns would be an advantage. It is the intention that the successful candidate will also work closely with high-profile external organisations who will provide access to relevant data. Coding skills in Python and R are highly desirable. To be eligible, applicants should have a first-class honours degree in a relevant subject or a 2.1 honours degree plus Masters (or equivalent experience). Criteria The Kent Law School Next Generation Law Doctoral Scholarships will be awarded to up to three candidates with research proposals of the highest quality. These Scholarships are designed to support research that aims to transform our understanding of law, in order to reshape its future relevance and build better legal answers to pressing questions about the theoretical, social, environmental, political, economic or technological challenges that define our times. One of these challenges is to support more students from under-represented backgrounds to undertake doctoral degrees in KLS and to enter legal academia. Remember: As a prospective PhD candidate, keep in mind PhD scholarships are more common unlike masters scholarships, but there’s still need for tact. For instance, taking the case of UK universities, a very common ‘misconception’ is that PhD opportunities advertised for Home/EU candidates cannot be awarded to international students. First, talk to the supervisor, show deep interest and see if you can get additional funding from elsewhere to support the fee difference (usually an internal university scholarship) and secondly the founder of this platform and many others we know received such awards, so there’s someone to talk to here! That is the reason we list interesting opportunities that offer only full tuition fees and stipend at the ‘home’ rate, but welcome applications from international students.
A few other things to keep in mind – You can apply for a PhD scholarship with an undergraduate degree!
