The PhD programme in Sustainability Science is a three-year programme that aims to produce scholars who will become key researchers in the field of sustainability science. The programme takes an innovative approach to sustainability, seeking to promote a better understanding of the issues by incorporating global change perspectives, specifically those related to climate change and biodiversity. The programme will equip graduates with comprehensive, multidisciplinary knowledge of sustainability problems, and deepen their understanding of the role of environmental sustainability in addressing current issues related to global change. The programme provides students with unique opportunities to interact with leading scholars and policymakers through lectures, international conferences, and workshops. Students undertake problem-oriented research by playing an active role in UNU-IAS research projects, and acquire the quantitative and qualitative analytical skills necessary to understand the underlying principles of various systems involved in sustainability issues and debates. Through coursework and research, PhD students gain critical thinking and problem-solving skills, as well as the technical literacy required to address sustainability problems. The programme starts in September, and by July of their third-year students are expected to complete all of the course requirements, obtaining at least 14 credits. Students can select courses from those offered by UNU-IAS, while also enjoying the opportunity to take courses at other leading universities in Japan such as the University of Tokyo, Sophia University, and International Christian University. Applications for the PhD Programme “Mathematics in Industry and Commerce, MIC” at the Technincal University Kaiserslautern with scholarship funding from the DAAD EPOS programme are open until 15 Jan 2022. The programme provides the opportunity to do a PhD in applied mathematics. Each year, four to five new scholarship holders can be selected for the programme. The condition for funding is that the countries of origin of the scholarship holders are classified as developing countries according to the OECD, ie they are listed in the annually updated DAC list. The DAAD scholarship covers the cost of living, travel expenses, a health insurance subsidy, and generous support for accompanying family members. In the programme, the doctoral candidates preferably work on mathematical modeling problems that are directly related to their home country. The optimal control of water networks or traffic flows, evacuation problems, development of earthquake-resistant concrete parts, simulation of the spread of diseases or new methods of financial and actuarial mathematics are only a few of the many fields of research. All research groups of the department accept applicants for the MIC programme. The doctoral programme MIC is designed for three years and always starts in October. A preparatory German course in August and September is funded by the DAAD and is binding. Admission requirements An excellent Master’s degree in mathematics as well as very good knowledge of the English language. In addition to belonging to one of the qualifying countries of origin, the DAAD requires two years of relevant professional experience. Hosts and their pathogens are often in conflict for their optimal survival/reproduction strategy. In some cases the goals are so different that pathogens have evolved a means of manipulating their hosts’ behaviour: often to the detriment of host survival. Well known examples include toxoplasma causing mice to (attempt!) to befriend cats, and dengue virus causing mosquitoes to bite more frequently. In this project, the successful candidate will investigate a more subtle manipulation which is of great significance to human and animal mosquito-borne virus transmission: temperature preference. Mosquitoes have an optimal temperature, too cold and they can’t function, too warm and their lifespan is greatly reduced. Conversely, mosquito-borne viruses are adapted to hot mammalian bodies, and replicate much faster at high temperatures harmful to the mosquito. Our group has demonstrated that following infection with such a virus, the mosquito actively seeks out high temperatures which it would normally seek to avoid. These temperatures are sufficient to result in the mosquito becoming infectious sooner, and hence capable of infecting more humans/animals. You will investigate the extent of this temperature preference using mosquitoes infected with viruses in the laboratory, determining by how much and for how long this preference for warmer temperatures lasts. You will use these results from your lab work to model ‘mosquito-behaviour-aware’ risk in areas where the climate is considered too cold for transmission – but environmental hotspots (e.g. houses) may enable virus-infected mosquitoes to become infectious. In collaboration with our partner lab in Durham University, you will investigate the mechanism by which viruses are able to perform this manipulation of the mosquito. Using RNAi gene silencing you will isolate the molecular pathways involved in temperature sensing and preference, and using physical manipulation, you will isolate the organs involved in the mosquito. As part of the project you will gain valuable training handling live virus in Containment Level 3 laboratories, learn mathematical modelling skills to apply your results to climate scenarios, and physical and molecular manipulation of mosquitoes for functional assays. Call for Applications BIGSAS-Scholarships for Female African Scholars based on the Continent DAAD Graduate School Scholarship Programme 2022 The Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies, BIGSAS, invites outstanding female African scholars based on the continent to join an international community of early career researchers working in the field of African Studies. BIGSAS provides a centre for creative and innovative doctoral training based on the inter- and multi-disciplinary research environment of the Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence at the University of Bayreuth. In 2022, BIGSAS is awarding two scholarships within the Graduate School Scholarship Programme (GSSP) provided by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). For these, BIGSAS will nominate candidates who have successfully passed the application procedure. The final selection on the scholarship will be made by the DAAD. The scholarship periods begin in October 2022 at the earliest (including a German language course starting in summer 2022, if applicable). Goldsmiths is part of the South-east Network for Social Sciences (SeNSS) Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP), funded by the ESRC to train the next generation of social scientists. Fully-funded ESRC studentships are available to research students via this DTP. There are up to 40 studentships are available across the 10 SeNSS institutions for entry in October 2022. Routes for research and training There are a variety of flexible routes for research and training, depending on your background and the research you’re planning to undertake. SeNSS positively encourages applicants from talented students whose highest qualification is an undergraduate degree, who may be funded to undertake a Masters (see 1+3 route below) 1+3 route If you don’t already have a Masters degree with an extensive methods component, you should consider applying for a 1+3 route. This offers one year of funding to undertake an approved research Masters, followed by three years of funding to undertake your PhD. +3 route If you already have a Masters degree with an extensive research component (for example, a research Masters offered by an ESRC Doctoral Training Centre), you will need to apply for this route, which offers three years of funding to do your PhD. +4 route
Some of our departments don’t offer a suitable research Masters, but instead offer a +4 route: four years funding to do your PhD, with a requirement to take core research training courses from the Doctoral Training Partnership in your first year. You will cover equivalent material to students on the 1+3 route, but you will not receive a separate Masters degree. Please note, candidates who, on application for funding, have already completed approximately half of the required research methods training may be offered 3.5 years of funding, with the first six months used to enhance and complete the required level of training. Value International students will be eligible for all UKRI-funded postgraduate studentships for the start of the 2022/23 academic year. Remember: As a prospective PhD candidate, keep in mind PhD scholarships are more common unlike masters scholarships, but there’s still need for tact. For instance, taking the case of UK universities, a very common ‘misconception’ is that PhD opportunities advertised for Home/EU candidates cannot be awarded to international students. First, talk to the supervisor, show deep interest and see if you can get additional funding from elsewhere to support the fee difference (usually an internal university scholarship) and secondly the founder of this platform and many others we know received such awards, so there’s someone to talk to here!
