Applications for the 2022 round of Wolfson scholarships is now open! The Wolfson Foundation awards funding to outstanding students who demonstrate the potential to make an impact on their chosen field. Wolfson Scholarships will be awarded to academically excellent applicants who should, ideally, aspire to an academic career. There are three scholarships available for 2022/23, which will be awarded to the top candidates across all Subject Disciplines of History, Literature and Languages. The International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe), Kenya, in partnership with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD*) In-Country/In-Region PhD Scholarships Programme and African university partners, invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for PhD scholarships in the African Regional Postgraduate Programme in Insect Sciences (ARPPIS). Seven ARPPIS PhD projects are available to nationals of sub-Saharan countries: see List of Projects The programme covers all student costs, including travel, living expenses, medical insurance, university fees and all research and training costs. The goal of the IST Austria PhD program is to produce intellectually broad, curious, open-minded scientists who are able to approach problems from different angles and can collaborate with diverse types of scientists. To this end, our students complete an innovative interdisciplinary training program consisting of both research and taught elements, and receive close mentoring by world-class faculty from different disciplines. All students whose broad research interests align with those of our faculty are eligible to join the IST Austria PhD program. Selection of the thesis supervisor occurs at the end of the first year. In the first year, students complete coursework and rotations in three different research groups. After selecting a thesis supervisor and passing the qualifying examination, students work on their thesis research, attend international conferences and colloquia, and receive training in teaching and other transferable skills. Research groups are deliberately kept small to ensure close supervision, and all students are mentored by several faculty members who make up their thesis committee. Students typically complete their studies in 4.5–6 years. All students are offered 5-year employment contracts. Students can finish their program earlier – in 4 or 4.5 years – or ask for a year-long contract extension, depending on the nature of the research. The aim of this DTP is to produce highly motivated and excellently trained postgraduates in the BBSRC priority areas of ‘Advancing the frontiers of biosciences discovery’, ‘Biosciences for sustainable agriculture and food’, and ‘Biosciences for an integrated understanding of health’. These are growth areas of the biosciences and for which there will be considerable future demand. Project description: Aquaculture production is increasing as food security becomes one of the main concerns for a growing population which increasingly requires more fish in their diet. Successful aquaculture relies in domestication, which in fish is very recent compared to birds and mammals. Fish depend upon their environment to trigger the different steps of their reproductive cycle, particularly oogenesis, affecting both oocyte quality and embryo developmental success. Global epigenetic changes occurring during embryogenesis are also influenced by the rearing environment, and the farm environment is known to cause large phenotypic and epigenetic changes. Epigenetic modifications can regulate gene expression without altering the DNA sequence. In mammals there is a reprogramming of DNA methylation during embryogenesis, but in some fishes it seems to be different, although it has only been studied in a few species to date. While in zebrafish DNA methylation does not undergo extensive erasure in embryos immediately after fertilisation, in medaka reprogramming seems to be similar to mammals, and our work suggests that in Atlantic salmon a small proportion of epigenetic changes caused by the rearing environment can be transmitted to the offspring. These data suggest that it might be possible to manipulate the rearing environment to control fish development and potentially embryo quality through epigenetic modifications, an option still underexplored in aquaculture. Moreover, if the epigenetic changes are passed to the next generation, epigenetic programming could establish an “environmental memory” during development to enhance adaptation to the farm environment and improve domestication. The main aim of this project is to identify epigenetic markers related to embryo quality and development which could be used to develop fish strains better adapted to live in captivity. For this, the student will develop a multidisciplinary project which will combine an experimental approach with methods on embryology and molecular biology (gene expression and epigenomics) using zebrafish and tilapia to assess the role of temperature changes development in determining embryo quality and its molecular basis. Specific training will be provided in fish husbandry and experimental design as well methods in embryology, DNA/RNA extraction, Next Generation Sequencing and Bioinformatics. Eligibility Academic criteria Applicants for a studentship should have obtained, or be about to obtain, a First or Upper Second Class UK Honours degree, or the equivalent qualifications gained outside the UK, in an appropriate area of science or technology. Applicants with a Lower Second Class degree will be considered if they also have a master’s degree or have significant relevant non-academic experience. Eligibility Academic qualifications A good honours degree at first- or upper second-class level, from a UK academic higher education institution. In the majority of cases, students will have undertaken an undergraduate course at a recognised UK higher education institution. UKRI Studentship Eligibility The eligibility criteria for UKRI funding changed for studentships commencing from the 2021/22 academic year onwards. Now, all Home and International students are eligible to apply for UKRI funding which will cover the full stipend and Home tuition fees. *The international portion of the tuition fee cannot be funded by the UKRI grant, but will be covered for successful applicants by the University of Strathclyde. Under the new criteria, UKRI have stipulated a maximum percentage (30%) of International students that can be recruited each year against individual training grants (in all subjects except Economics, for which the International student award cap will be 50%). The final funding decision will be made by the SGSSS and ESRC. To be classed as a Home student for fee purposes, applicants must meet the following criteria: Be a UK national (meeting residency requirements), or Have settled status, or Have pre-settled status (meeting residency requirements), or Have indefinite leave to remain or enter. Remember: As a prospective PhD candidate, keep in mind PhD scholarships are more common unlike masters scholarships, but there’s still need for tact. For instance, taking the case of UK universities, a very common ‘misconception’ is that PhD opportunities advertised for Home/EU candidates cannot be awarded to international students. First, talk to the supervisor, show deep interest and see if you can get additional funding from elsewhere to support the fee difference (usually an internal university scholarship) and secondly the founder of this platform and many others we know received such awards, so there’s someone to talk to here! That is the reason we list interesting opportunities that offer only full tuition fees and stipend at the ‘home’ rate, but welcome applications from international students.
A few other things to keep in mind – You can apply for a PhD scholarship with an undergraduate degree!
