Technological plasmas can be found in all areas of high-tech applications ranging from microelectronics fabrication to deep space thrusters. Few other areas include textiles, greenhouses gases reformation, analytical chemistry techniques, materials coating, and lighting. In recent years many new technologies emerged where there is a direct interaction between plasma and water, creating a complex environment filled with puzzling and exciting science. The aim of this PhD project is to use Molecular Dynamics (MD), an advanced simulation technique to explore the science behind the plasma-liquid interface. The specific aims of the project are quite versatile and can be tailored to accommodate the interests and expertise of the applicant. The selected candidate will be trained to use advanced simulation software, in addition to scientific writing and presentation skills. The selected applicant will join the Technological Plasma Group at the University of Liverpool which has more than 20 members with expertise including electrical engineering, chemical engineering, physics, numerical modelling, laser diagnostics, and microbiology. However, for this potential to be unlocked, industry requires the creation of high calibre datasets to enable design & product certification. ASTM International is at the forefront of driving material property generation with the ASTM AM Centre of Excellence (AM CoE), with this PhD supporting the creation of materials properties for critical applications. This will include understanding & evaluating the effect of defects, test methods, and relating the process of creating AM material to the lifing of a component in service. The project will be predominantly based at Swansea University, but liaison and research activities at affiliated universities and partners is envisaged. The output of this PhD will support Standardisation for Additive Manufacturing, providing the student with global exposure through the extensive ASTM International network. Specialist Additive Manufacturing training will be provided, as well as the opportunity to collaborate with international partners whilst working as a member of the AM CoE. Yet, we often cannot even tell whether they are uncertain about their decisions. In this project, we will develop Bayesian techniques with tools from the optimal transport theory to better represent and quantify uncertainties in machine learning models. While theoretical results are promising, the deployment of the optimal transport theory in a wide range of machine learning applications is limited due to its heavy computational burden. We will derive algorithms for uncertainty propagation and quantification based on computationally efficient approximate optimal transport methods. The resulted toolkit will be validated on a real-world clinical application and is transferable across a wide range of safety-critical AI applications. The successful applicant will be supervised by Dr Yunpeng Li and co-supervised by Professor Wenwu Wang. The PhD student will be based at the Nature Inspired Computing and Engineering (NICE) research group in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Surrey. The student will also benefit from resources from the Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Surrey. This is an opportunity for a full time PhD in Medical Sciences on the topic of “Social regeneration and mitigating isolation: strategies and solutions for improving well-being for people living with advanced illness towards the end of life”. The profound physical deterioration and social changes associated with advanced illness places people at greater risk of social isolation, loss of social connectedness, and what has been referred to as ‘social death’. The PhD candidate will explore these concepts, their conceptual value and explanatory applicability. The focus is on understanding what protects social and personal wellbeing in advanced illness. The project will be undertaken within populations at high risk of social isolation including those, for example, with multimorbidity and frailty, advanced heart/lung/kidney disease. A full-time UK PhD Scholarship will include fees at the home student rate and maintenance (£15,609 in 2021/22) for three years, depending on satisfactory progress. Applications are invited for a number of Departmentally-funded Teaching Assistantship opportunities for PhD students based in the Department of Statistical Science, UCL. The Department is among the three largest Statistics groups in the UK with more than 30 academic members of staff. Research in the Department is organised into six themes: biostatistics; computational statistics; economics, finance and business; general theory and methodology; multivariate and high dimensional data; stochastic modelling of complex systems. Teaching Assistantships (at least 4 positions) - starting date, January 2022 The Teaching Assistantships can involve any topic within the Statistical Science remit. BIOSCIENCES: FULLY FUNDED SWANSEA UNIVERSITY PHD SCHOLARSHIP: CARBON IMPACTS OF BLANKET BOG AFFORESTATION AND POST-HARVEST PEATLAND RESTORATION Closing date: 14 September 2021 Key Information This scholarship is funded by Swansea University's Department of Biosciences. Start date: October 2021 Supervisors: Supervisor 1: Dr Cynthia Froyd Supervisor 2: Dr Jon Walker Supervisor 3: Dr Iain Robertson Supervisor 4: Dr Emilia Urbanek Project description: 2021 saw the formal inclusion of peatlands in the UK GHG emissions inventory, increasing their estimated contribution to national emissions to 3.5% (as opposed to 2.3% reported in the 1990 baseline; BEIS 2021). To begin to tackle these increased emissions figures within the UK Inventory, the Climate Change Committee (2020) set out a recommended pathway for peatlands contribution to a Balanced Net Zero Pathway for the UK, including: all low-productive trees of less than Yield Class 8 (average annual timber growth increment of 8m3 per year per hectare) are removed off peatland by 2030 and all upland peat is restored by 2045. An estimated 18% of UK peatlands have been converted to forestry (Artz et al 2019). In Wales, Vanguelova et al. (2012) estimated that ~12% of deep peat in Wales is afforested, of which 60% is under coniferous tree cover. Afforested peatlands are a significant source of GHG emissions compared with intact peatlands (9.91 t CO2e ha-1 yr-1; Evans et al 2017); however, there are many evidence gaps in our understanding of the carbon flux from afforesting peatlands, their felling, restoration and subsequent recovery; including what level of restoration is possible in terms of carbon storage and flux, impacts of vegetation composition, plant traits and microtopography as an integrator of processes controlling GHG emissions at forest-to-bog restoration sites (Creevy et al 2020) with a need for evidence from Wales to inform Welsh national policy and practice. Working in collaboration with the Lost Peatlands of South Wales Heritage Lottery Project and Natural Resources Wales, this PhD will address the impacts of the afforestation of blanket bog habitat, and subsequent felling and restoration interventions, on carbon flux from peatlands in south Wales. The study will include such aspects as: Soil CO2 emissions – at micro and nano-tope scales Fluvial carbon export – (dissolved organic carbon and particulate organic carbon) Peat carbon stores - whole column peat cores and carbon content inventories Determining the standing crop carbon store Measurement of tree root systems in peat - using ground penetrating radar Carbon accounting of felling operations, restoration intervention and recovery Eligibility Candidates must have a First, Upper Second Class Honours or a master’s degree with Merit, in a relevant discipline. Remember: As a prospective PhD candidate, keep in mind PhD scholarships are more common unlike masters scholarships, but there’s still need for tact. For instance, taking the case of UK universities, a very common ‘misconception’ is that PhD opportunities advertised for Home/EU candidates cannot be awarded to international students. First, talk to the supervisor, show deep interest and see if you can get additional funding from elsewhere to support the fee difference (usually an internal university scholarship) and secondly the founder of this platform and many others we know received such awards, so there’s someone to talk to here!
