PhD Studentship: Mechatronic system and control design for robot-assisted upper limb neurorehabilitation
2021-08-01
University of Sussex
Closed
Description:
This scholarship is under the supervision of Dr Yanan Li in the Robotics and Mechatronic Systems Research group. Type of award Postgraduate Research PhD project Robot-assisted neurorehabilitation has been developed in the past decades to provide physical training and address limited human and financial resources in health care systems. Most of existing robotic systems for rehabilitation are bulky and thus not suitable for use at home. The idea of this project is to create a desktop robot for upper-limb rehabilitation, which is compact in size but provides sufficient functions and moving space thanks to its mobility. This project will tackle various research challenges in different steps to design such a robot, including mechatronic system design, motion control system development, GUI design and high-level human-robot interaction control design. The cooling and shading sub-program are a multi-disciplinary team working to improve the current understanding and modelling of clouds and radiation over the Great Barrier Reef, and design and test potential interventions. The PhD projects will undertake research across one (or some) of the QUT-led components of the cooling and shading sub-program. These include: taking observations of the atmosphere over the great barrier reef. Observations will be used to evaluate the performance of atmospheric models and provide ground truthing for satellite-based observations. designing and testing sea salt droplet generation methods that have the potential to be scaled up for implementation over the GBR. Sea salt droplet generation systems will be designed to shade the reef by fogging (directly scattering incoming solar radiation) and marine cloud brightening (changing cloud properties to scatter incoming solar radiation) modelling the dispersion of sea salt droplets through the marine boundary layer and their capacity to scatter solar radiation evaluation of prototype sea spray droplet generation systems in-situ over the GBR.

International Fully-funded PhD Studentship in Spin Biology in UK
2021-07-07
University of Exeter
Closed
Description:
The University of Exeter’s College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences is inviting applications for a fully-funded PhD studentship to commence in September 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter. For eligible students the studentship will cover tuition fees plus an annual tax-free stipend of at least £15, 609 plus an enhanced stipend and research allowance for 3.5 years full-time, or pro rata for part-time study. The student would be based in the Living Systems Institute in the College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences at the Streatham Campus in Exeter. Project Description Evidence from in vitro and physiological experiments suggest that certain biological processes are inherently sensitive to weak magnetic fields. The canonical example is the visual avian compass. Recent findings, however, suggest that the phenomenon is of broad relevance to biology. Remarkably, both physiological magnetosensitivity and animal magnetoreception are thought to emerge from dynamics on the quantum scale. Specifically, the quantum coherent dynamics of electron and nuclear spin in so-called radicals – unstable reaction intermediates with an odd number of electrons – render their recombination reactions sensitive to both static and oscillatory magnetic fields (Radical Pair Mechanism and successors). While a principal understanding of these processes has been established through theoretical studies and experiments, many question remain, including e.g. the identity of the active radical pair. This project, sponsored by the Department of the Navy, Office of Naval Research under ONR award number N62909-21-1-2018 aims to utilize the theory of open quantum systems and quantum optimal control to manipulate, commandeer and drive radical reactions of physiological relevance. In particular, you will develop the theoretical tools needed to furnish external electromagnetic stimulation protocols that enable experimenters (in the form of project partner Prof. Aiello at UCLA) to distinguish competing hypotheses, and deliberately influence and eventually control spin in biological reaction processes. This award provides annual funding to cover tuition fees at the Home or international rate, research costs and a tax-free stipend of at least £15,609 plus an enhanced stipend and research allowance per year. Students who pay international tuition fees are eligible to apply. The studentship will be awarded on the basis of merit for 3.5 years of full-time study to commence in September 2021. Entry requirements Applicants for this studentship must have obtained, or be about to obtain, a First or Upper Second Class UK Honours degree, or the equivalent qualifications gained outside the UK, in an appropriate area of science or technology (physics, physical chemistry, applied mathematics, etc.). Required skills and traits: Interest in quantum mechanics and biophysics; an affinity to theoretical and computational work; and familiarity with numerical programming, ideally in the HPC context. If English is not your first language you will need to have achieved at least 6.0 IELTS and no less than 6.0 in any section by the start of the project. Alternative tests may be acceptable

Remember: As a prospective PhD candidate, keep in mind PhD scholarships are more common unlike masters scholarships, but there’s still need for tact. For instance, taking the case of UK universities, a very common ‘misconception’ is that PhD opportunities advertised for Home/EU candidates cannot be awarded to international students. First, talk to the supervisor, show deep interest and see if you can get additional funding from elsewhere to support the fee difference (usually an internal university scholarship) and secondly the founder of this platform and many others we know received such awards, so there’s someone to talk to here! Read their inspiring stories here. That is the reason we list interesting opportunities that offer only full tuition fees and stipend at the ‘home’ rate, but welcome applications from international students.

A few other things to keep in mind – You can apply for a PhD scholarship with an undergraduate degree! (we have several personal examples); You must not have a project in mind to get a scholarship, there are numerous projects to choose from!; 3 years is sufficient to complete a PhD (for instance in UK); Get in touch with the prospective PhD supervisor prior to applying for the scholarship. More of these tips and real examples on our blog.
