PhD Studentship in the School of Natural and Environmental Sciences – “Green” Solar Cells
2021-07-01
Newcastle University
Closed
Description:
Value of award The studentship and covers full fees and an annual living allowance of £15,609 (at the 2021/22 UKRI rate). Also significant additional funding to cover research costs and local, national and international travel (conferences and exchanges). Number of awards 1 Start date and duration September 2021 for 4 years. Application closing date 1 July 2021. Overview The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Renewable Energy Northeast Universities (ReNU) is a collaborative doctoral training programme run by the Universities of Northumbria, Newcastle and Durham. In addition to undertaking an individual scientific research project described below at one of the three partner Universities, doctoral candidates will engage with added value training opportunities for example in business, innovation and internationalisation through a 4-year training programme that has been designed to maximise the benefits of a cohort approach to doctoral training. This project will develop a route to photovoltaic devices which can compete with established silicon technology at a fraction of the cost. The proposed solution processed solar cells, can be fully assembled at low temperature, are 1000 times thinner (i.e lightweight), and are environmentally benign. An increasingly intense research effort over the last decade dedicated to lead-based perovskite solar cells has led to performances now exceeding that of silicon photovoltaics, but the toxicity of the material limits the potential for commercialisation. This project will develop a method to fabricate devices which have the desirable features of perovskite solar cells but are assembled using non-toxic precursors and solvents and avoid the production of toxic waste streams. The main features of the project are to combine materials synthesis using sustainable approaches with solar cell assembly and testing to develop highly efficient but environmentally benign solar cells.

Institute for Global Health PhD Studentship(Economics)-University College of London
2021-06-21
University College of London
Closed
Description:
The postgraduate research degree programme we offer at the Institute for Global Health is relevant to a variety of disciplines across the field of global health. Our programmes aim to provide interesting, challenging and excellent training for exceptional students so that they may successfully pursue careers in research, medicine, health services, laboratory science, policy, or public health. MPhil/PhD research in IGH is varied and may have an international dimension, including field work carried out abroad, setting up a study within the UK, or using data from existing studies working with the respective IGH-based Principal Investigator. The MPhil/PhD programme lasts three years, if taken full-time, or five years if part-time. With the support of their supervisory team, students finalise their research proposal during the first year, informed by the current literature and practice. It may also require collection of preliminary data or pilot questionnaires. Students are initially registered for an MPhil, upgrading to a PhD, subject to satisfactory academic progress. For a successful upgrade to PhD, the student must prepare a written report, give an oral presentation and pass an oral examination. Postgraduate research degrees students investigate a relatively narrow topic but may be examined on a broad field of study. Where students need to spend periods of time collecting data from overseas, that will contribute directly to their thesis, they may do so provided their study leave plans are approved in advance. All postgraduate research students are expected to undertake 10 days of skills training each year over their 2-5 year programme, which is logged and audited electronically. This will include, for example, courses on research design and statistics, ethical and legal issues, presentation skills, thesis production and career planning. For the MPhil/PhD degree, applicants must have a minimum of an upper second-class (2:1 or better) Bachelor’s degree and a Master's degree in a relevant discipline from a UK university or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard. Applications from individuals who do not hold a Master's degree, but who have extensive relevant work experience, may also be considered.

Remember: As a prospective PhD candidate, keep in mind PhD scholarships are more common unlike masters scholarships, but there’s still need for tact. For instance, taking the case of UK universities, a very common ‘misconception’ is that PhD opportunities advertised for Home/EU candidates cannot be awarded to international students. First, talk to the supervisor, show deep interest and see if you can get additional funding from elsewhere to support the fee difference (usually an internal university scholarship) and secondly the founder of this platform and many others we know received such awards, so there’s someone to talk to here! Read their inspiring stories here. That is the reason we list interesting opportunities that offer only full tuition fees and stipend at the ‘home’ rate, but welcome applications from international students.

A few other things to keep in mind – You can apply for a PhD scholarship with an undergraduate degree! (we have several personal examples); You must not have a project in mind to get a scholarship, there are numerous projects to choose from!; 3 years is sufficient to complete a PhD (for instance in UK); Get in touch with the prospective PhD supervisor prior to applying for the scholarship. More of these tips and real examples on our blog.
